Treating Rising Damp

Dampness occurs when a fault in the basic structure of the building lets in water from the outside.

There are basically two types of damp:

Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp occurs if water is coming in through the walls or roof, for example, under a loose roof tile or through cracks on the outside wall of the house. The usual signs are mould, a musty smell and wet patches on the walls or ceiling after rain.

Rising Damp

Rising damp occurs if there is a problem with the damp proof course which is a barrier built in to floors and walls to stop moisture rising through the house from the ground. The usual evidence of rising damp is a "tide mark" on the walls which shows how high the dampness has risen. There can also be a musty smell. (click here for rising damp page)

You should attempt to recognise the difference between dampness and
condensation and if you think that your house is suffering from either rising or
penetrating damp, you should contact us for advice and a no-obligation quote.

Penetrating damp can affect almost any location in the home and is usually the
result of a building or plumbing fault allowing water to enter into the property.
A brown stain normally occurs on the affected surface, which grows in size as more
water penetrates If the fault is not rectified plaster will start to perish and in the case
of ceilings could even collapse.

The occurrence of spalling brickwork, cracked cement render or pebble dash, or the face of bricks blown and detached from the surface, allowing water to soak into brickwork or substrate, may be a cause of pentrating damp.

If you think you have a problem with penetrating damp you should have the fault
repaired as soon as possible. First you will need a specialist to assess the cuase of the
problem in order to offer the best solution.
